Writing a book review doesn’t take special ability. We are used to write since we were in school. We usually have some tasks to write a critical book review back in college as our lecturers want to ensure whether we really master the subject of the book. Writing a good book review should follow some guidelines.
First of all, you should study about the book title. Write a comment about the title which the author has chosen. Is it relevant in accordance to the story? Is it appropriate for the book content? When you are reviewing a book, your answer will be based upon your understanding of it. There is no correct or incorrect answer for this.
Afterwards, you should know what the author use for the genre of the book. Surely you should read the whole of the book first before commenting. Genres include romance, thriller, fantasy, science fiction and so on. Like stated, this is very easy to determine as long as you have read its content.
Then you can point out on how the opening message went out. A good book should have a catchy beginning. Write down if it made you read the content of the book with such excitement after reading the opening message. If not, then state it there also. Other important thing is the dialogue. Things you should notice is that the dialogues that were used should be appropriate for the story. Evaluate the choices of words for the characters whether they are good or not.
The next thing to comment is the plot of the story of the book. Tell about the theme that the writer used. Site if there were figures of speech that were used, and what kinds are they. Another is the types of speech that has been used. Make sure to tell whether the story was written persuasively, demonstratively, informative, etc.
The mechanics of the book should be commented also. They include grammatical errors punctuation errors and words spell, All in all, every comment should be very objective, no matter if it be negative or positive comments.
